Starting work

1. Most people spend a third of their lives at work and spend more time with their work colleagues than with their families or friends. So it is important that people enjoy their work as much as possible: and enjoying work means choosing the right career in the first place.

  1. People in Britain can start at the age of sixteen, though many people stay at school after this age. For all people, as they approach the end of their school lives, the big question is - what are they going to do?

  2. Most young people have several choices open to them when they leave school. Here are some of them. They can leave school at sixteen, and take a low-paid job, often a manual one, such as working in a shop or a factory. They can leave school at sixteen, take a job but spend one day a week at a College of Further Education learning more about the theory and practice of their work.

  3. Many people who are learning a practical skill - for example, car mechanics, caterers, haidressers or typists - this. At the end of their training, they get aqualification which gives them a better change of promotion and higher wages. At the same time, they have gained practical experience in their job because they have been working while training.

  1. Many people stay at school to take O-level and A-level G.C.E. examinations. This means working very hard and earning no money for two or three more years. However, with O-levels and A-levels, a student has many choices open to him.

  2. If he goes to a Technical College, he can get a qualification in a practical skill such as engineering, art and design, secretarial work, business studies or child care. He can go to medical school or a hospital and learn to become a doctor. These training courses take from two to seven years.

  3. If a sudent hs very good results in his A-levels he can go to a university and get a degree in a subject like Languages, Maths, Philosophy, Literature or Science. Cooperative Learning

1. The concept of cooperative learning is alien to all of teachers who work using
traditional methods, but it offers our children the adventure of finding their own
answers.

2. If you took a doctor from the 19th century and put her in a modern operating

room, she would have no idea what to do, but if you put a teacher from the 19' century into a modern classroom she would be able to carry on teaching without pause. Teaching methods have hardly changed in one hundred years.

3. Some educational consultants think that the idea remains, because students are
empty containers which the teacher fills with knowledge, and that all students have to
do is listen and write. But some of them think that this approach does not work in
today's changing world. We are not teaching creative problem-solving. Traditional
teachers encourage competition, believing that this brings out the best in people.

  1. But this is not so. Encouraging children to concentrate on getting the best marks destroys motivation and takes the run out of learning. The teacher's role is no longer to feed students with information. The facts are available in libraries, on CD ROMS and on the internet. What students need are the skills to find this information, to use it and to think creatively in order to solve the problems of our world.

  2. Some teachers suppose that cooperative learning is the future of education and trie best way to encourage responsibility, tolerance and helpfulness towards others. The strong ones coach the weak ones endlessly so that they can participate in the discussion too.

  1. In cooperative learning, the traditional classroom physical layout is abandoned. Children do not sit in straight rows of desks facing the teacher, but rather face one another to make it easier to share ideas. Pupils learn to work first in pairs, then in threes and final!> in teams of four. Students are required to participate actively in discussing and sharing their own knowledge. The teacher, who is still very important to the process, becomes the helper rather than the master.

7. Cooperative learning turns the classroom from a competitive arena into a place
where learning facts and life skills is both more fun and more effective for pupils and
teachers alike.

U.S. Education

  1. Americans have shown a great concern for education since early colonial times. Among the first settlers there was an unusually high proportion of educated men. Some of them, graduates from Cambridge^Came together and in 1636 founded Harvard College** 140 years before American Independence/Before the revolution in 1779 rune colleges had already been opened in the colonies, most them later becoming universities.

  2. In the course of the 17-th - 18-th cfynuries free public schools and many academies (schools offering a classical education as well as more practical training were established in many places.

Elementary and secondary schooling combined consists of 12 years of classes and is compulsory for every child from the age of 6 to the age of 16 (or 18 in some states).

  4. Perhaps the most distinctive feature of American education is the absence of the uniform national school organization and curriculum throughout the country and as a result there is no Federal Government direct control over educational system. It is for each state to make its own laws for the system of education.

  5. Standardized (proficiency) tests play a decisive role at almost every level of education, especially in the admission to college and universities. The first is the SAT (Schoolastic Aptitude Test) and the second is the ACT (American College Testing program). These tests provide common, nationwide measuring sticks, but they are not governmentally controlled.

  6. Successful applicants at colleges and universities are usually chosen on the basis of students' high school records and teachers' recommendations. The education goal is to achieve universal literacy and provide people with the knowledge and skills necessary to promote their individual welfare. This goal remains an ideal towards which the American educational system is directed.

7. Most scientists agree that a great deal of the economic, political, scientific and cultural progress has been made by America in its relatively short time thanks to the belief supported in the country that the future of the society depends on the quality and quantity of its educated citizens.
